Chemical Plant Cable Tray Case Study with SS316 Corrosion Resistant Trays

Project Background

A chemical processing plant in the Middle East needed to replace aging cable trays that had corroded badly after years of exposure to acidic vapors, salt-laden air and high ambient temperatures. The replacement had to work in one of the most aggressive environments possible: a coastal chemical facility where ordinary galvanized steel was failing well before its design life. The Challenge

The existing galvanized trays had developed red rust within a few years, and localized pitting had begun to weaken support points. Because the trays run above process equipment, any failure risked both safety and expensive unplanned shutdowns. The operator needed a material that could withstand the specific mix of chemicals and coastal humidity present on site.

Our Solution

We recommended stainless steel 316 cable trays, whose molybdenum content provides dramatically better resistance to chloride attack than standard 304. We supplied ladder and perforated trays in widths from 200mm to 600mm, together with stainless fasteners to eliminate galvanic corrosion between components.

Design Support

Our engineers reviewed the cable schedule, confirmed load capacity at the actual support spacing and recommended passivation to ensure a clean, corrosion-resistant surface throughout.

Results and Outcomes

• Approximately 5,000 meters of SS316 tray supplied and installed
• No corrosion or pitting observed in subsequent inspections
• Reduced maintenance compared with the previous galvanized system
• Extended design life and lower total cost of ownership

The project confirmed that specifying the correct stainless grade from the outset is far more economical than repeated replacement in aggressive chemical environments.
